Why does FGS exist?

We believe that sharing is caring. That's why we are devoted to sharing free resources for all under-resourced students.

Welcome to First Gen Support!

"I first made First Gen Support (FGS) public on my 18th birthday, July 28th, 2020. Started off as an Instagram page, FGS quickly grew to a community of passionate students creating and sharing opportunities. From my personal experience and talking to my peers, I found that there are many barriers preventing under-served students to know the opportunities available to them. I gathered a group of changemakers nationwide to help empower students who were in our shoes to help them achieve their maximum potential. Hope you can join us in this revolution to break barriers in the education system!"

Julia Sun, Founder & Executive Director, Cornell'25

What does FGLI stand for?

In short, first-generation low-income (FGLI).

First-generation means you are the first person in your family to go to a four-year institution. Low-income depends on the area you live in.

  • Socio-economic Mobility

With a college degree, children born in the lowest quintile of income distribution increase their chances of class mobility by 84 percent.

  • First Gen Barrier

First-generation college students are 70 % less likely to attend a four-year university than their non–first-generation counterparts.

  • Lack of Guidance

High schools serving low-income and minority students have 1 counselor per 1000 students. The recommended counselor-to-student ratio is 1 to 250 (American School Counselor Association).

  • Job Availability

2 out of 3 jobs would need more than a high-school diploma.

FGS Mission Statement

At First Gen Support, we aim to provide advice for first-generation, low-income, and/or immigrant (FGLI) students to help them successfully navigate high school and efficiently transition to college.

First-generation, low-income students have a huge disadvantage because (1) parents lack previous college experience and knowledge, (2) they come from under-resourced high schools, and (3) they cannot afford expensive counseling and test preparation.

We believe that to bridge the gap of educational disparities in high school and beyond, first, we need to empower FGLI students. Second, better educate and familiarize the general public with the unique challenges FGLI students face.

Our Values

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit

Advocating for your ideas and challenging the status quo! At FGS, we grow fast by failing often & failing fast.
